Protecting properties post lockdown

Posted on: 11/06/2021

As life loosens up again after lockdown, customers are coming to us to protect their properties, possessions and for the peace of mind that their loved ones and pets are kept safe.

ONS reports 32% drop in crime during lockdown

Findings reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show a significant drop in crime during April and May 2020, compared to the average for that time of year in the pre-lockdown period. Underlying this were major drops in domestic burglary and other theft of personal property. Clearly, with all of us spending much greater amounts of time at home, the opportunities for would-be burglars diminished. But as we come out of lockdown and emerge into the wider world once more, home owners may feel nervous about leaving their properties unguarded. With many of us going into the office once again, getting out and about more, or even planning that long-awaited holiday, home security systems including CCTV, security gates and access control are solutions for peace of mind.

Burglary rates bounce back

Research published in the Crime and Science Journal echoes the ONS findings. In March, 2020, burglary rates were down around 15% on normal levels; come April and May, they were down around a third below what would be expected if the pandemic hadn’t occurred. Though, from June, 2020, burglary rates started to increase again. The impact of lockdown on burglary rates are attributed not just to people being physically in their properties, and thus a deterrent to would-be burglars, but also to the ‘eyes on the street’ effect; with everybody in their homes, there’s a heightened awareness of what’s going on in the neighborhood. Any sights or sounds out of the ordinary were more likely to be noticed. Without this ‘eyes on the street’ effect, many are turning to CCTV installations for their homes, so they can keep an eye on their properties at all times. For the same reasons, for residential new-builds, it represents peace of mind for would-be buyers.

Reassessing your home security systems

If you’re anxious about the risk of burglary or theft, you’re not alone. The same research published by the ONS shows that despite people rightly perceiving that crime rates dropped over lockdown, the level of worry about crime remained the same. There had been no change in people’s level of worry about crime during the pandemic. In fact, 82% reported that they still worried about crime in general. With the risk of domestic burglary on the rise back to expected levels, you may be looking for a home security system for while you’re away, whether that’s domestic CCTV, automated security gates, an access control system, or all of the above. If you’re in the market for a new property, such features may be on your list of must-haves – especially, if like many, you’re leaving the city for the sticks where properties are more likely to be detached and more remote.

More homes are installing CCTV, security gates and access control systems

It’s not unusual, then, that we’re seeing more and more homes with domestic CCTV installations, gated access and access control systems. Talking with our customers, we certainly sense that people feel they have more to protect now – not just the bricks and mortar and the personal possessions inside, but most importantly, as we emerge from the pandemic, the loved ones that live there or may be visiting. You may yourself have noticed more security system installations in your neighbourhood. But we understand that it may feel like alien terrain trying to figure out what you might need for your own unique property. Which is why at Harrisons Security Services we’re always happy to provide a free, no-obligation consultation with one of our friendly and knowledgeable engineers. We’ll be happy to advise on options and take some of the hassle out of having to research what might be best for your needs.

Homes and gardens

So many of us have invested a lot in our homes and gardens over the past year or so. Did you know, that according to the Office of National Statistics, that on average, across the UK, time spent doing gardening and DIY rose by 147% to 39 minutes a day? It’s no wonder, then, why you may now feel more protective of your space and want to ensure that it’s secured at all times, whether you’re home or away. We appreciate this sense of protection and also that your home is unique to you. Even houses with similar layouts might require something different, simply because of how they’re used. You and your family are unique, as is your home, which is why a one-to-one chat and free survey is the best starting point for deciding on what you might need. We’re a family-run business and we understand the concerns of our domestic customers.

Do you have more possessions to protect?

Many of us have emerged from the past year with new toys in our lives. If you went out and bought a new bicycle during lockdown, then you’re not alone. The UK Bicycle Association has reported that between April and June 2020, bicycle sales increased by 63% year-on-year. The greatest increase in sales was for bikes under £1,000, but sales of e-bikes over £1,000 also shot up, with an increase of 150%. We also know that technology including tv sales went up; with more time at home, people were looking for entertainment for themselves and the whole family. But with many of us leaving the home more and more, our possessions may be at risk of theft. This may be a particular weight on your mind if you’re, at last, planning a trip away or now find yourself back in the office.

Protecting loved ones

Protecting your home 24/7 isn’t just about protecting your possessions when you’re not in. There’s the peace of mind knowing that you and your loved ones are safe, too. And as we’re increasingly allowed to visit relatives, or have loved ones come to stay, investing in a home security installation – whether that’s domestic CCTV, security gates or an access control system – can provide that added peace of mind. This is especially important if you find yourself and your family members coming and going at different times, as work, socialising and recreation opens up. You may also be one of the 3.2 million households in the UK who have acquired a pet since lockdown. With lockdown the worst ever year for dog thefts, there’s the added anxiety of leaving your pets at home if you’re getting out more or going to work and can’t take them with you.

Considering CCTV?

Home CCTV systems can include a range of features. There are wired and wireless options, where you can install a monitor and recording device inside your home or record directly onto a PC. Many people choose to install a system that can be accessed remotely via a smartphone app or online. Then there’s the option of external CCTV, internal, or both for full protection. For external CCTV systems, a strong, quality make is preferred. Ideally you want your camera to be vandal-proof, and it absolutely should be weatherproof. With so many considerations, it can be a minefield trying to research what’s best for you. We’re happy to take some of the pressure off and have a talk through about what you might need, whether that’s a system you’re happy to manage yourself or one that’s part of an ongoing monitoring package.

What are the benefits of automated security gates?

An automated gate for entrance to your property can be a formidable deterrent to would-be burglars. It’s ideal for stopping unwanted walk-through access to your property, but can be easily operated from the comfort of your vehicle or an entry keypad. Security gates are ideal for many residential developments with a shared drive, and also for larger properties set back from the road. Combined with other security measures, a security gate shows you’re serious about security, and often it is that first line of defense that is the most effective. We appreciate you probably have better things to do with your time than trawl online for all the types and specs of security gates out there. We’re always happy to have a friendly chat and to provide a free, no-obligation survey. If you’d like to go ahead, we can provide a full design package, comprehensive installation, a highly professional service and exceptional workmanship.

Access control: more user friendly than you think?

Technologies can seem daunting when we’re not familiar with them. For something as intuitive as coming and going from your home, the last thing you want is to make things more complicated and another technology in your life that you need to grapple with. But an access control system, once you have a good one installed, can bring convenience and peace of mind to your daily life. It can mean less running around to let people in; you can vet who you open the door to, giving you the control to avoid unwanted callers; and you can eliminate a reliance on physical keys. Rather than research online about what’s involved, you’re always welcome to have a friendly chat with one of our experienced engineers. We’re happy to provide a free no-obligation consultation, and if you’re happy to go ahead offer a full design package and comprehensive installation.

A combined system of best fit

When customers come to us looking for security solutions, they’re interested in a range of measures. From a security perspective, having more than one line of defence is usually advised. Of course, this depends on the type of property and how it is used, but for larger detached properties especially, a combination of a security gate, CCTV, intruder alarm and access control may provide the optimum security to protect your home, its contents and you and your loved ones. For residential new-build developments, this holistic approach is particularly important. Involving us at the early stages, too, means we can design a suite of security measures that’s uniquely suited for each development. This means you can have a list of clearly specced-out security features ready for prospective home buyers.
